New I-9 Form Released
The U.S. Department of Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) requires employers to verify the identity and employment authorizationeligibility of new hires. Employers must fill out USCIS Form I-9 to satisfy the requirement. On March 8, 2013, the USCIS released the new version of this form. The new form is nine pages long, including the form, instructions, and the List of Acceptable Documents. The I-9 Form itself has been reformated and expanded from one page to two and includes additional data fields.
Employers must begin using the updated Form I-9 immediately for all new hires. A 60 day transitional period is available. All employers must use the updated form for new hires by May 7, 2013. Employers should not execute new Forms for existing employees who do not require verification.
